I have researched this in depth since my poor dog died of kidney failure due to poor quality dog food!!(this is the only reason I answer these questions … to try and save a dogs life or at least to not let him/her suffer because of bad food)
Fromm Dog Food is Great for dogs and cats …http://www.frommfamily.com/ $42- $45 per 30 lb bag
NO fillers….some good quality grains….NO corn….gluten or by-products or wheat
ALL human grade food….fruits…veggies and probiotics!!WHOLE fruits and veggies!!!! Just like the kind we get at our grocery stores!
check it out you wont regret it !
http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/TOTW has a high protein content (not recommeded for non athletic dogs)
Taste of the Wild contains Ethoxyquin which is a toxic fish preservative. (TOTW says that the cooking process kills all of it but it scared me away from their product)
around $42 for a 30 lb bag …. its the cheapest 6 star food ..
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ lots of great dog food choices on this site !!
Orijen and Welness are great but it is $60 – $80 for a 30 lb bag…high protein as well ..not good for non athletic dogsOrijen is WAY to high in protein for a non working/non-agility dog ..
Fromm Is what my puppy gets it has a lower protein % and great ingredients! 5 outta 6 stars due to lower protein (but most dogs should not have high protein levels …. It makes their kidneys work overtime for no reason)
You can get it online and if you go to the website you can find stores near you .. they wont be at walmarts and the like… they are in feed stores .. Agway..tractor supply stores etc
IF your dog is not going to be a hard working/agility dog all this high protein can do more harm than good in the long run,,, you wont notice it now but it can take its toll on a dogs kidneys as it ages.
there is also a brand called 4health at the tractor supply store.. it is only $30 for a 30 lb bag.. and it seems to be of good quality. (not as good as the foods mentioned above but it good for the price if you are on a tight budget.)
also of you go to http://www.tractorsupply.com you can get a printable $5 off coupon!!
they have tons of low and high end foods there(including TOTW and 4 Health)

Orijen and she is picky because you are training her to be picky, when she doesn’t eat you run around and find her something better and tastier to have……..so why would she eat what she is given, she sits and looks at you, doesn’t eat it, you get her boiled chicken or hamburger so why would she change what works for her………….although I don’t blame her not wanting to eat SD

http://www.frrco.com/show_prod.php?cat=c&mode=a Is the best dog food I’ve ever found. Do not spoil your dog by adding in the hamburger or you’re right, she never will eat anything else. But she will not starve herself if you put down food and take it away if she doesn’t eat. Offer it to her three times a day. She should get hungry and eat it very soon

Orijen is a great food for dogs of all sizes. It contains no grains, corn or fillers. Just 70% meat and 30% veggies and fruits. It’s great stuff. My dogs all love it and 2 of them are quite picky eaters. It’s very healthy for them. A little pricey, but worth it.

Kirkland and Blue Buffalo are the best brands of dog food, in my opinion.

Royal Canin has a Schnauzer specific dog food that is formulated to address her breeds specific needs. It is very palatable and is a really amazing dog food.

Try Ultra Holistic. Is a great food and guaranteed she will love it. It has a smaller bite, three meat proteins for great smell and flavor. Packed with antioxidants and is also great for skin & coat. They make a small breed specific food for your mini schnauzer. I used it for my dog when he was still alive, senior formula of course. He was a little chihuahua/rat terrier mix and could be picky. He loved it. Check out the website.

Good Luck!
**I would just like to add that Ol’Roy is a horrible food. I would never recommend that. All Ground Corn which doesn’t digest and meat by-products(head, feet & intestines)

try halo’s spot’s stew.i fed my dog science diet for a few months till i got educated on dog food.while she was on science diet she was also picky & only ate it for a few days then she was switched to IAMS for a few days only with Beneful(bad food btw & i didn’t know better back then)or with people food.As soon as I fed her Halo’s she eats it without any people food added to her dry food. Not even canned do I have to mix.Halo’s uses all human grade ingredients that people can eat. Now,my dog eats Halo’s almost every day with no complaints of refusing her food unless she’s full or ill.

Science Diet is a HORRIBLE dog food. My dog used to eat the Science Diet Small Bites, until I found out that it was loaded with crap. And Ol’Roy, Pedigree, and Kibbles n Bits are even WORSE!
I love it when people ask what is the best brand of dog food because this means that they want only the VERY BEST for their dog. It’s very sad that veterinarians don’t know much about dog nutrition. The first reason is because they are not taught on this. The second is that some horrible brands of dog food will sell their foods to the vets. They tell the vets that they are the VERY BEST dog food, so who are the vets supposed to believe? The veterinarians make a profit when they sell the dog food to their patients. However NOT ALL vets are like this. Very few actually know quite a lot about nutrition and recommend good brands that they don’t even sell in the vet! What brand of dog food do you feed your puppy?
To tell if the food is good or not, you look at the ingredients. The first five ingredients are usually the most important. This is because they are listed by weight. The heaviest food is the first on the list, which means it takes the majority. The first two ingredients should ALWAYS be a meat. For example, it could be "chicken meal", "lamb meal", "turkey meal", etc. It doesn’t even have to have the word "meal." It can say "deboned chicken" or "beef" or anything like that. NEVER should it say "meat meal" anywhere on the list. This is because meat could be anything and it is not specific enough. It could be a dead dog/cat, not something that a dog would really want to eat. Avoid any ingredients containing any form of corn, gluten, by-products (for example: chicken by-product), soy, sorghum, wheat. These are all very unhealthy for the dog and it is very hard for the dog to digest it. It is always good to have fruits and veggies in dog food.
Any food from Target, Walmart, and grocery stores/pharmacies are pretty much just crap. Also any commercial dog foods are just down right bad. Now Petco carries a lot of great dog foods like Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Pinnacle, Ultra, and Halo. PetSmart also carries Blue Buffalo. If you can’t find a decent food for a good price, you can go online to buy it. Good foods are usually at least $2 per pound, but a lot of the times online, they are only $1 per pound. It also depends on your area; for example, in some places, good dog foods may only be $1 per pound which is a REALLY good deal! If you don’t like buying it online (that’s me ;D), just go to the dog food’s official website and many of them have store locators. For example, here is Canidae’s:
http://canidae.com/company/storelocator
That’s how I found mine. If you do plan on buying Canidae, I recommend the All Life Stages one which has four different meat meals in it (yes they are specific), unless your dog is allergic to one of the meats, or grains. They have a grain-free formula which is JUST AS GOOD as this one. All Canidae formulas have no corn, wheat, soy. sorghum, by-products, etc. The term "all life stages" means puppies, adults, and seniors can eat it. The place where I bought Canidae was $10.99 for a 5 pound bag. That’s even cheaper than a lot of the crappy foods like Science Diet, Eukanuba, and Iams!
You probably already know this, but if you don’t, you need to switch carefully/gradually from one brand of dog food to another. It takes about a week long period. On the first day, do mostly old food and some new food. The second day, add more new food and less old food. Around the fourth day, he should be eating half of each dog food. By the last day, he should eat ALL new food. Switching too fast may lead to diarrhea.
Some good dog foods:
Wellness/Wellness Core
Innova/Evo
Canidae (that’s what I feed my dog)
Orijen
Solid Gold
Taste of the Wild
Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul
Kirkland Dog Food (from Costco only)
Blue Buffalo
Pinnacle
Ultra
Halo
Merrick
etc. (you get the picture)
Foods that say Holistic/Premium are good foods.
Avoid these dog foods:
Ol’ Roy (from Walmart, probably the worst food ever!)
Purina
Iams
Eukanuba
Science Diet
Beneful
Chef Michael’s
Diamond
Royal Canin
Pedigree (probably second worst after Ol’ Roy)
etc. (you get the picture)
If your dog still doesn’t eat the new dog food, I suggest putting in some boiled chicken. Each day, reduce the amount of chicken you put in his food, and eventually, he should not be eating ANY boiled chicken.
If you found a dog food I didn’t mention that you don’t know is good or bad, go to http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com and then click review. Type in the brand name and it will tell you if what rating it is (1-6 stars). You can also just go there to look at the foods. They will explain why they have that rating, show the ingredients, and say if they recommend it or not. A four star rating of higher is what you should feed your dog. Canidae All Life Stages is 5 stars and the other Canidae ones are 4 but some o
