Few people would disagree that the dog is man’s best friend and has been for centuries. They keep us company through thick and thin. Any dog owner can recall the days of first meeting their canine companion, and the busy days of training their dog to obey basic commands and use the bathroom outside that inevitably followed. They can also tell you the joy and pride they felt when their dog finally started to obey those commands, after many, many dog treats and practices. What if your dog is allergic to those treats? How can you shower them with praise and reward them for their accomplishments then? Luckily, there is a special category of treats for dogs that are sensitive to certain common canine food ingredients, chemicals, and additives. These are known as hypoallergenic dog treats.

What are hypoallergenic dog treats, you ask? Simply put, they are dog treats that do not contain ingredients that generally cause allergy symptoms in dogs. This means it is devoid of ingredients such as corn, wheat, beef, chicken, soy, or dairy, and generally chemicals and additives, and usually contains grains such as rice, bran, or whole oats, and meats like salmon, bison, lamb, or venison. It is best to know exactly what your dog is allergic to before you purchase a specific type of hypoallergenic dog treat.

Depending upon what your dog is allergic to, there are all sorts of options for hypoallergenic dog treats. Locally, they can be found at a holistic pet food store, or even an organic grocer such as Whole Foods or Trader Joes. If you’re willing to look on line, however, the sky’s the limit on the number of brands and varieties of hypoallergenic dog treats you can find. Common brands such as Zukes, have their own web sites that give information on a variety of products. Other companies, such as The Pet Health and Nutrition Center, offer websites that showcase numerous brands of hypoallergenic dog treats, their ingredients, and their benefits. There are also specialty stores such as Barbara’s Canine Catering that offer treats that can be delivered right to your door.

Dog owners have had a new focus in recent years on what their dogs are eating and on what is in their dog’s food. Granted an allergy to something in the food can be a very serious health issue, but sometimes a dog can be allergic to something in his environment and not something in his food. If this is the case then starting to feed the dog a hypoallergenic dog food. A good rule of thumb is that if you Think your dog has an allergy observe his behavior of a week or more. See what and when he has various reactions, such as sneezing, vomiting, itching and so forth. Many things that the dog comes in contact with can be the real source of the allergy. Chemicals in dog beds or bedding, blankets even a shelter or dog house if the dog uses one can be something that is making him sick.

Food bowls made of plastic or resin. Cleaning product you are using in the house carpets and carpet cleaner and a very serious allergen can be mold. If you even suspect t that you may have mold in your home do have a professional inspect your home. Mold has been shown to cause serious health problems for humans and dogs.

After you have checked your dog’s environment and also the products you are using to groom him then you can turn

our attention to a possible food allergy and try a hypoallergenic dog food.

Be sure when ever a health problem like an allergy is present in you dog that you have a Veterinarian give him or her a careful exam. Don’t forget to bring with you all the data that you have collected to help evaluate what maybe the problem. If you follow these simple guide lines you will go far in helping your dog cope with his allergy. And while you are at it take a look at all the green products that are available now at reasonable prices not just for your dog but for yourself and your household.

The best dry dog foods are found when looking at the
hypoallergenic choices that are available.
As many pet owners have discovered, hypoallergenic dog food is much
better for your dog than other types of pet food. This type of food is designed to work better
with your dog’s digestive system and to make him healthier than he would be on
a diet consisting of more mainstream food choices. There are a lot of choices out there when
deciding what type of hypoallergenic food you believe would be best for your
dog. The best way to decide is to do
research your choices and make your decision based on your dog’s own health
issues.

If your dog has food allergies of any kind, there
are a variety of hypoallergenic foods out there which address these
problems. The best dry dog foods are the
ones that will work with your dog’s system.
Many hypoallergenic foods are made with rice as opposed to any harsher
grain products. If your dog has an
allergy to rice, options are available that substitute potatoes for the
rice. If certain types of meats give
your dog problems, there are hypoallergenic choices that are made from all
types of meat. Simply choose the food
that does not contain the meat your dog is allergic to.

Your pet can also develop skin allergies or other
skin irritations due to any number of chemicals or preservatives that are in
many types of dog food. This can easily
be helped by switching to hypoallergenic dog food.
These foods do not contain these types of chemicals and are some of the
best dry dog food options around because of it.
A skin irritation can cause your pet a lot of pain and anxiety, as well
as being unhealthy in general. The best
way to avoid this problem is to eliminate foreign chemicals from his diet.

The best dry dog foods for your pet are the ones
that ensure his health and happiness.
There are many options out there, and you must pick the one that works
best for your dog. Hypoallergenic dog
food can be found through a variety of companies which maintain a variety of
ingredient options. You must always
choose the brand and food that works best with your dog’s own digestive
system. Try a variety of options until
you find the one that is right for you and your pet.

If you are searching for a more holistic approach to your dog’s food allergy problem, Sojos Grain Free Natural Dog Food Mix may be the hypoallergenic dog food your pet needs.

You see, Sojos is completely natural – no additives, no preservatives, no artificial anything. Everything in the ingredient list is actual food that you’ve already heard of – like sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, celery, apples, whole eggs, flax meal, parsley leaf, calcium carbonate, carob powder, kelp powder, alfalfa, ginger root, and garlic.

Each ingredient in this hypoallergenic dog food has a purpose. For instance, the vegetables and fruit provide essential vitamins and fiber that your dog needs for a balanced meal. Whole eggs not only act as a protein source, but also help add a beautiful and lustrous sheen to your pup’s coat.

Flax meal is a natural antihistamine and also works to make the hair softer (among other benefits as well). Parsley leaf helps freshen the breath so your dog doesn’t have the typical unpopular “dog breath”. Calcium carbonate is just what it sounds like – a calcium source. Carob powder adds flavor and gives your dog a little energy boost – it’s chocolate for dogs. Kelp powder helps decrease shedding and has more vitamins and minerals than I can list here.

Alfalfa strengthens joints. Ginger root is great for dogs with sensitive digestive systems as it “settles” the stomach. Garlic is a natural flea and tick repellent, adds flavor, and has so many benefits, you’d need a book to list all of them.

Simply add the Sojos Grain Free Natural hypoallergenic dog food mix to some meat and a little bit of water, and let it soak up the juices before serving it to your beloved canine. What could be a better way of showing your pup how much you love her – besides letting her sleep on the bed while you sleep on the floor (which probably isn’t going to happen)?

Hi to all readers and visitors to this site. Thanks again for all the information you have shared. I am writing today because I have some interesting news to share about dog food allergies related to dog’s nails.

My dog recently went in for his annual check up and the Vet noticed that his nails were cracked an worn in several places. Now Trey, my dog, is a rough and tumble chocolate Labrador Retriever He digs, he swims he chases balls, ducks , rabbits, fish, sea gulls and all kinds of things. So his nails are not usually salon quality.

The Vet said it appeared that he may have had a nail fungus infection, which can result form his paws being wet for an extended period of time or from an allergy to something in his food.

Trey has been eating a hypoallergenic dog food but he also had spent two weeks on vacation with us sailing around the Cape Cod Massachusetts area. That meant wet feet every day, and with a dog you are more concerned with making sure their chest and body gets dry than their feet. So the verdict is still yet to be determined on the chipped and broken grayish nails.

It’s not easy to see from the picture but his nails have a grayish color and the black hard shell is receding from the tissue under neath. Eventually the nail can fall off and expose the tissue.

However the Vet also shared with me his view of commercial dog food.”it is mostly all hype not very good nutrition..” And he told me that he cooks for his own dogs. He told me once a week he makes a kind of baked casserole.

I asked if he would share his recipe and he said that it was very simple. Brown rice or sweet potato as starch a good meat source such as chicken or beef,Organic of course, and then carrots and or peas. He mentioned that often home made food lacks the calcium dogs need and suggested unflavored tums is a good source. Simply grind up a few in a coffee grinder and add to the recipe. Then bake the whole thing in the oven and feed during the week.

I thought many of you might like to know about both the home made food and the possibility that nail fungus infections can be a symptom of a food allergy.

Once again as I always say we are not Veterinarians here just people who share our experiences and try to provide good information. So if you think your dog may have a similar problem by all means get him or her checked out by a Vet.

In the last few years several dog food companies have developed hypoallergenic dog foods.Often dog owners are confused about these products and do not truly understand why they have been developed and when to consider them for their dog and what the benefits might be.

The easiest way to think about hypoallergenic dog food is that these foods contain ingredients that are better suited to a dog’s natural digestive system and they are designed to address a food allergy.

A dog’s digestive system is designed to break down raw proteins and some vegetable matter however the ingredients in many dry and some wet dog foods in the United States are largely made up of corn, wheat, dairy, soy and other grains. This can cause the dog’s own digestive system to work against properly breaking down the food. The result can be an allergy to one or more of the ingredients which can cause health problems; such as itchy skin, hot spots, hair loss, upset stomach, as well as episodes of diarrhea and vomiting.

The ingredients in hypoallergenic dog food designed to work with a dog’s natural digestive system. The ingredients usually vary from what is included in the average dog food available in the Untied States. For instance the protein sources in hypoallergenic dog foods are usually venison meat, duck, rabbit and salmon instead of chicken, lamb or pork. Brown rice is often used instead of corn, wheat, dairy or soy.

Something to keep in mind; the terms organic, natural and hypoallergenic all have very different meanings when you are discussing dog food. A product can be sold as natural and not be organic, or vice versa and hypoallergenic is really about a type of diet rather than being organic or natural.

The best hypoallergenic dog food will be made from organic ingredients and those ingredients will be natural, and not artificial or artificially preserved. But the point of the hypoallergenic food diet is to address an allergy to one or more of the food ingredients the dog is currently consuming in his or her daily food.

Always remember that the health problems listed above can also have other sources, such as flea and or tick bites as well as other parasites. So be sure to have your dog thoroughly checked out by a Veterinary and by all means discuss your dog’s current diet with your Veterinary and seek his or her opinion. In so doing you could save money on future costly Vet visits and improve your best friend’s quality and quantity of life.

Since hypoallergenic dog food is a great choice for your dog, hypoallergenic dog biscuits are just as good of a choice. If you are feeding your dog this special type of food, why would you decrease the benefits of it by giving him a less healthy biscuit? It is important not to introduce any bad ingredients or foods when feeding your dog such a healthy diet. Your dog will enjoy the taste of these biscuits as well as the long term effects to his health. My favorite biscuit to make for my dog is a combination of oats and molasses which we call her “Yummies”.

To make these “Yummies” you must make sure to use ingredients that you are sure your dog is not allergic to. The recipe for these biscuits can be altered to fit whatever is best for your dog and whatever your dog likes. I altered my recipe from the one I originally found online, because it called for quite a bit of sugar. I don’t feel comfortable feeding my dog a large amount of sugar, mainly because I am worried that she will gain an unhealthy amount of weight. Because of that, I replaced the large amount of sugar with a much smaller amount of molasses. This allows her to still have a sweet biscuit, but at a much healthier level.

I combine around a half a cup of oats with a cup of oat flour, which is wheat free. I add one egg and three tablespoons of olive oil to help her keep her coat healthy and shiny. Two tablespoons of molasses and one half of a cup of water complete the list of ingredients. I combine all of this into a large mixing bowl and mix it until it is thoroughly combined. I then treat it like any other cookie dough and cut it into small shapes that are fun for me to treat my dog with. Hearts and balls are our favorite shapes for these dog biscuits.

In the original recipe, it was suggested that I should cook the dog biscuits for fifteen minutes at 350 degrees in the oven. This is another thing I have changed from the original. I cook them at around 300 degrees for around ten minutes. This leaves them with a slightly chewy texture that my dog seems to like much better than the harder variety. This biscuit is my dog’s absolute favorite and she seems to enjoy them much more than she ever did the store bought variety.
