What are the advantages of grain free dog food?

by Jamie on June 8, 2010

I plan on feeding my dog Canidae grain free dog food.

Grains are not readily digestible to dogs. Grain free is good because it is easier on their digestive system. It is also good for dogs with allergies to grains. Higher quality foods may still contain grains, but they are more likely to be brown rice or barley. Lower quality grains are corn and wheat. Some dogs do well on foods with higher quality grains, while others need a grain free diet.

Just be careful. Not all dogs will respond as well as others to this food. I’ve seen some dogs with pretty bad skin conditions after switching to a grain free diet while others do wonderfully. Every dog is different.

If your dog is allergic to all grains, it is a good option. If that is the case I would consider feeding RAW rather than an expensive grain-free diet.

For most dogs there is no advantage. For 1 out of a thousand it is a better option. For 1 out of 100,000 it is an absolute necessity.
I think it is great that companies like Canidae are willing to provide options like it. For many years it was only available by prescription.

After switching my dog to a grain free/corn free food, her coat got better, her itching all but disappeared and she had more energy and less poop. She just looks better. She acts like she feels better too.
