What some pet parents don’t know is that any dog can have sensitivities to both food ingredients and the environment in which they live. Many times this is confusing because the first response when a dog gets sick or displays signs of illness is to look to what the dog is eating. But on some occasions it is actually a substance or environmental toxin that is actually causing a reaction in the dog.
A good first step to solving any such problem is to check with your Veterinary and make some notes on what the symptoms are and how often they are happening. Your Vet can look for various signs of hidden illness and make sure that all vital signs are good. From there the Vet make recommend a food sensitivity test which involves an elimination diet to track down the sources of any food related allergies or sensitivity. This process can be very time consuming and requires close attention to detail as you go down a list of foods and keep track of reactions or non reactions in your dog. But for now that is the only true test that is available. As of this writing there is no blood or other test that can truly determine what maybe a food allergy.
In may case dogs will improve on a diet that is either “novel” meaning it is a food that contains ingredients that the dog may have never consumed before. Such as duck, rabbit, salmon or something similar. The Vet may also recommend a minimally processed food. Meaning raw or raw frozen. Often times the process by which conventional dog food is made is harsh on the ingredients, such as soy, corn or wheat and renders a less that digestible result. After all keep in mind wild dogs did not evolve eating corn. soy, wheat or other filler products. Their wild diet consisted of animals they killed or foraged and although they will eat plants when necessary it is not a staple of their original wild diet.
As mentioned above sometimes what you may think is a food related problem may actually be an environmental one. Meaning something in the dogs immediate living area or playing area is causing a reaction. This could be a bed or bedding, it could be a floor finish, or a cleaning agent being used. This means you have to test things by removing what you think maybe the problem and see what the results are. Most of this requires detective work. Again keeping track of what you changed and what the results were. Hmm Pizza? maybe not the best choice.
